The Challenge:

In the final quarter of the C20th, a new and still unresolved challenge arose to confront educators, parents, and employers alike. That challenge is the proliferation of private, often unaccredited Internet- based “Universities” offering instant degrees, not only by tuition, but also Distance Learning, Life Experience, Examination, or Thesis. Such degrees are often granted in a matter of days, being in theory at least, the summation of many years’ knowledge and effort.

In some instances, these “one-stop-shop” degree merchants are no more than fraudsters issuing faked and expensive “wallpapers”. They serve mainly to flatter the recipient’s ego, but in practical terms do little harm. However, some imitate legitimate schools’ transcripts enabling people to get jobs for which they are unsuited or dangerously under qualified. In some areas, these present a real threat. Fraudulent teaching certificates, for example lead to bad teaching and the “dumbing down” of education to the detriment of children’s lives and prospects. Faked medical diplomas cost lives-thousands of lives a year in the hands of unqualified doctors and nurses. In our opinion, those who profit from such diplomas are guilty of gross irresponsibility. HaBAS is in part a fight against these practices, which as well as endangering people, badly tarnish the whole image of Distance and Alternative Education.
